Industrial Engineering Technology and Technicians
Industrial engineering technologists and technicians help engineers solve problems affecting manufacturing layout or production. They apply engineering theory and principles to problems of industrial layout or manufacturing production, usually under the direction of engineering staff. They prepare machinery and equipment plans, design workflows, conduct statistical production studies, and analyze production costs. They may perform time and motion studies on worker operations in a variety of industries for purposes such as establishing standard production rates or improving efficiency.
To be successful in this occupation, you need to have critical thinking, be able to solve complex problems, and have solid communications skills.
These positions test selected products at specified stages in the production process for performance characteristics or adherence to specifications. They compile and evaluate statistical data to determine and maintain quality and reliability of products. They also study time, motion, methods, or speed involved in maintenance, production, or other operations to establish standard production rate or improve efficiency.
In addition, they read worker logs, product processing sheets, or specification sheets to verify that records adhere to quality assurance specifications. They also verify that equipment is being operated and maintained according to quality assurance standards by observing worker performance.
This occupation requires training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree.
