Auditor

Bookkeeper, Accountant, or Auditing Clerk

A bookkeeper is the person who completes and maintains financial records by computing and organizing numerical data on revenues and expenses. As this person helps manage overall financial accuracy, the role is vital to the health of any size company or organization.

Calculating and verifying data are two of the biggest responsibilities of being a bookkeeper. A bookkeeper may, for example, regularly manage and track company financials such as accounts receivable (money owed to the business by customers) and accounts payable (money that the company owes to suppliers) as well as other internal expenses like payroll. Another duty may be to verify the accuracy of work done by coworkers.

As a bookkeeper, you may work alongside an accountant or auditor to help perform your duties. Most bookkeepers, however, spend their time recordkeeping and ensuring financial data is being properly recorded.

Many bookkeepers have a certificate or associate degree, and receive some level of on-the-job training or apprenticeship, in combination with classes. Knowledge of both math and computing will be helpful in getting started in the field.
